Winston-Salem, NC – Catalina Mariano-Cruz Killed in Fatal Crash on US-52

Winston-Salem, NC (January 9, 2021) – On Saturday, January 9, a woman was killed in a fatal crash that took place near an intersection in Winston-Salem.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, the accident took place at US-52 and US-421. Police confirmed that two vehicles collided head-on with each other due to reasons that are not fully known. One of the vehicles forcefully rolled over.

Paramedics confirmed that 59-year-old Catalina Mariano-Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in the vehicle that rolled over. The driver of that vehicle, identified as 62-year-old Pedro Banos Avila, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, identified as 20-year-old James Edward Cuthrell, did not have injuries but remained at the scene.

The roadway was blocked in the area for an extended period of time.
